Getting Started
While the concept of prostate cancer may seem daunting, early detection can be key to better, more effective treatment-- and may even reduce concerning side-effects, such as bladder control problems and erectile dysfunction. Remember, the sooner prostate cancer is detected, the better chance a patient has for successful treatment with fewer issues.
So how do you know if you may have some form of prostate problem? Difficulty with urination, and frequent erectile dysfunction can be two symptoms. (Click here to learn about other symptoms.) But if you have these or any other health-related concerns, remember to consult your doctor. Taking control of your prostate health today may mean better understanding and treatment options tomorrow.
Yet, even if you aren't experiencing symptoms, if you're a man over 50 and you haven't had an annual prostate exam, consider scheduling one. And if for any man at high risk of prostate cancer -- that includes African-American men over 40, or men with a family history of prostate cancer -- consider beginning annual prostate exams at age 40.
