2008 Fundraisers for Prostate Cancer Held
On June 15 and 16, the Allegheny General Hospital Prostate Center and the Western Pennsylvania Prostate Cancer Foundation held the annual Father’s Day Ride and Stride and the Shoot-Out for Prostate Cancer.
Nearly 350 people attended the Father’s Day Ride & Stride at North Park on June 15. Participants had their choice of bike rides of 25, 50 and 100 kilometers or a two-mile fun walk. The courses started and finished at the North Park Pool Parking Lot. Activities throughout the morning included food, music, dozens of door prizes, informational displays with giveaways and entertainment for youngsters, and a special visit from the Pirate Parrot.
The Shoot-Out for Prostate Cancer, a golf and sport shooting tournament, was held June 16, at the Longue Vue Club in Verona, Pa. Close to 100 attendees enjoyed an afternoon on the links or at the target range, while supporting Pittsburgh’s leading organizations in the fight to defeat prostate cancer.
Combined, the two events have raised nearly $54,000 to date and donations are still coming in.
“On behalf of the Allegheny General Hospital Prostate Center and the Western Pennsylvania Prostate Cancer Foundation, I would like to thank the participants, friends and other benefactors who once again made these events a huge success,” said Ralph Miller, M.D., director, Allegheny General Prostate Center and the chairperson for both events. “Through the monies raised at these events the center and foundation can continue to provide advanced care to prostate cancer patients, promote patient education, and eventually, assist in eliminating this deadly disease.”
The Allegheny General Prostate Center – part of the West Penn Allegheny Cancer Institute – has treated more than 4,500 patients at its North Side facility since 1996. The center is the only comprehensive multidisciplinary prostate cancer program in the region, providing patients with state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic alternatives for this life-threatening disease.
The Western Pennsylvania Prostate Cancer Foundation, founded in 1999, supports both laboratory and clinical research for prostate cancer and other urological diseases. It promotes patient education and the development of educational materials for prostate cancer patients and their families.
