Follow-up and Support
When a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, it means more than having a physical condition - it is an emotional experience, too. Men with prostate cancer and their families are offered the entire range of services at Allegheny General Hospital, an academic health center. Services include:
- Psychologic and/or psychiatric counseling to help handle the emotions encountered during and after the course of treatment.
- Social Work Services to help patients locate services, programs, and other resources in their communities, such as support groups and financial-assistance programs.
- Man to Man is an American Cancer Society program that provides trained "survivor volunteers" to men coping with the diagnosis of and treatment for prostate cancer. In other words, you can speak directly to a trained American Cancer Society volunteer who has gone through treatment for prostate cancer himself. Discussions can be single or multiple, by phone or in person, and you can even speak to a volunteer who had the same treatment that you are having. For more information, call toll free at 1-800-ACS-2345.
The Allegheny Cancer Center Staff also makes available an array of educational materials that can help answer patient questions. The goal of the Prostate Center team is to work with patients and their families to help achieve the highest level of health and the finest quality of life possible.
