Follow-up and Support
When a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer, it means more than having a physical condition - it is an emotional experience, too. Men with prostate cancer and their families are offered the entire range of services at Allegheny General Hospital, an academic health center.
Services include:
- Psychologic and/or psychiatric counseling to help handle the emotions encountered during and after the course of treatment.
- Social Work Services to help patients locate services, program and other resources in their communities, such as support groups and financial-assistance programs.
- Man-to-Man-The prostate center partners with the American Cancer Society and the Man-to-Man support program. Trained volunteer counselors, who are themselves prostate cancer survivors, are available to discuss patient concerns and problems.
The Allegheny Cancer Center staff also makes available an array of educational materials that can help answer patient questions. The goal of the Prostate Center team is to work with patients and their families to get the best results possible in the treatment of prostate cancer.
