About Us
The Allegheny Prostate Center opened in April 1996. It is designed to specifically meet the needs of those patients with recently diagnosed or recurrent prostate cancer. Patients usually spend two to four hours at the center. They are evaluated by both a urologist and a radiation oncologist. The physicians will review the patient's medical records, X-ray films and pathology slides. The center is equipped to perform transrectal ultrasound and/or prostate biopsies, if necessary.
Subsequently, patients take part in a discussion with the physicians and other patients regarding treatment options. Possible treatments include:
The physicians will provide a description of each procedure, including the possible complications, and will make a recommendation as to which treatment or treatments they believe are most appropriate in each case, along with the reasoning behind their choice. Patients are encouraged to ask any questions they might have. Our philosophy is that, although we can provide guidance, each patient is unique and ultimately each patient must make the decision he believes is best for him and his family.
